What Does Dermabrasion Mean | Skin Resurfacing

The Dermabrasio is a mechanical abrasion of the superficial skin using a rotating abrasion head. This stimulates the skin’s deeper layers to regenerate, thereby creating a more uniform skin surface.

Dermabrasion is used to treat problem scars such as acne scars, burn scars, and scars resulting from accidents or surgeries.

Information on the surgical procedure

In dermabrasion, the skin is treated with a rotating abrasive head. The abrasive head is placed on the problem area, and the high-speed abrasion removes and smooths the upper layer of skin.

To prevent shingles, you should take antiviral tablets one day before and for five days after the procedure. The treatment lasts approximately 15–30 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Time spent at the clinic and anesthesia

The treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis. It is performed under light anesthesia, possibly in combination with sedation; for larger areas, brief general anesthesia may be used.

After the dermabrasion treatment

After the treatment, the skin should be cooled and treated with an anti-infective ointment. Complete healing takes about one week. Afterward, the new skin is still very sensitive and should not be exposed to direct sunlight for several weeks.
