What Is an Abdominoplasty?

These procedures are indicated when the skin’s elasticity has diminished following significant weight loss. An abdominoplasty may also be necessary if the skin has lost its firmness due to the aging process. Redness and inflammation can develop in the existing skin folds, which may also require treatment by a dermatologist.
Information on the operation
During an abdominoplasty, excess skin and fatty tissue below the navel are removed. An incision is made around the navel. The abdominal wall above the navel is lifted upward and then tightened down to the pubic bone. The navel is then pulled through the abdominal wall and sutured in place. Drains are inserted to remove any fluid buildup. These are left in place for approximately 2–4 days. In cases of minimal excess skin, an abdominoplasty can also be performed without repositioning the navel.
Hospital stay and anesthesia
Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the extent of the procedure, an inpatient stay of up to 7 days may be necessary.
