What is rectus diastasis?
In Rectus diastasis , the straight abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis muscle), separate to both sides. This results in a bulge in the abdomen, which is considered bothersome both physiologically and aesthetically. Rectus diastasis is caused by significant weight loss. During this process, the muscles are stretched significantly, similar to what happens during pregnancy.
Information on the operation
During rectus diastasis repair, the two rectus muscles are exposed and reattached using stabilizing sutures. This requires an inconspicuous horizontal incision in the lower abdomen, similar to that used in an abdominoplasty. Excess skin and fatty tissue can be removed at the same time. Drains are inserted to remove any fluid buildup. These are left in place for approximately 2–4 days.
Hospital stay and anesthesia
Rectus diastasis repair requires a hospital stay of several days. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
