During our mission in Ukraine, over 80 patients were presented to us. We treated all the children together with Dr. Vasily Savchin and his team as well as Dr. Andriy Riznyk, who will continue to care for the patients on site. Once again, a large number of children with congenital malformations such as ptosis (drooping) of the upper eyelid, vascular malformations (hemangiomas), or ear malformations were presented to us. We were also able to perform breast reconstruction after breast cancer using autologous tissue from the lower abdomen.
We surgically treated all children for whom surgery was indicated. After a 4-day stay, we were able to satisfy ourselves before departure that all patients, young and old, were doing well.
Our young patients who were still too young for surgery are waiting for the next mission.
The resident plastic surgeons and ophthalmologists were very interested in our new surgical methods and are looking forward to participating again in the next mission.
