At this year's annual congress, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our society, which was founded half a century ago here in Bochum. One of the founding members at the time, Professor Fritz Müller, gave a moving speech that reflected the tremendous development of our field over the last 50 years.
In an international symposium, luminaries such as Professor Michael Neumeister, Springfield, Professor Garcia-Elias, Barcelona, Dr. Herndon, Galveston, and Professor Blondeel, Ghent, spoke about future treatment options in the field of reconstructive, hand, burn and breast surgery. Under the heading "Reasearch and Innovations", we were inspired by the presentations by Dr. Eriksson and Dr. Pomahac, Boston, Professor Hong, Seoul, Professor Aszmann, Vienna and, above all, the presentation by PD Dr. Tobias Hirsch, Münster, whose working group was awarded the prestigious von Langenbeck Prize for the sensational research result: "Skin renewal through stem cells".
This year's Dieffenbach Medal was presented to Professor Steinau, Bochum, who has earned an international reputation in the field of sarcoma surgery in particular.
There was a valuable exchange of experience in numerous working groups on the following topics: breast reconstruction, possibilities and limitations of free fat tissue transfer, tightening and shaping the body contour after weight loss, eyelid surgery and much more.
We have once again taken home a lot of news for our patients and look forward to being able to report them to you.
