Acne inversa is a chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands and the outer root sheaths of terminal hair follicles. It is also called hidradenitis suppurativa and affects both women and men between the ages of 20 and 40. The etiology is not clearly understood, though a genetic predisposition appears to play a role. Symptoms and clinical presentation are exacerbated by obesity, smoking, and diabetes mellitus.
