INTERPLAST - Mission in Tanzania 2007

We promised to drive to Gonja a third time and so we did. Unfortunately, the driver we had been provided with from the bishop's seat was night-blind and the vehicle's headlights were faulty. In addition, the hood kept popping open while we were driving. The last part of the journey to the hospital was a sand and rock track that had been cut into the mountain and was not secured against slopes. As we arrived at the beginning of the rainy season this time, the road was correspondingly wet and slippery. Fog developed. The poorly adjusted headlights, which either illuminated the sky or the ground, and our driver, who was blinded at night, did not inspire confidence that we would arrive safely at the scene. So two people from the team got out and walked to the right and left of the vehicle to show the driver the way.

Our team this year consisted of Dr. Klaus Exner, Dr. Zeynep Altayli and myself, Dr. Bianca Baican as plastic surgeons, Dr. Genia Kunits and Dr. Ina Heppel as anesthetists and Dorothee Köhler as operating room nurse.

Not so many patients came to see us that year. The hospital fell into disrepair and the public's trust in the medical treatment there declined. The hospital had gained a better reputation thanks to our visit in previous years, but this did not last over time.

Our nurse, who has been at our side for the last few years during the missions, invited us to her home. We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon with her and her husband. She seemed very thoughtful and told us that she had injured herself on a sick patient a few weeks ago. The results of her blood tests would arrive the following day, so she was worried.

She didn't show up for work at the hospital the following day and didn't come to say goodbye to us when we started our return journey a few days later.
