We would like to report on our participation in „132nd Congress of the German Society of Surgery“ reports, which this year under the heading:
„Surgical Art in a Changing Value System„ which took place in Munich from April 28 to May 1, 2015.
Since the founding of the German Society for Surgery in 1872, surgery in Germany has achieved rapid developments and medical advancements that have exceeded even the wildest expectations.
The major challenge for surgery to provide the patient with the best possible treatment in a responsible and self-determined manner increasingly requires today both a high level of expertise in surgical skill and technique and in perfect surgical management.
Interesting sessions from the field of plastic and aesthetic surgery enriched the congress: new aspects of free autologous fat tissue transfer, individual planning techniques for breast reconstruction, scar-sparing treatment of male breast enlargement, treatment options for capsular contracture following silicone implants, new techniques in bariatric surgery, results of interdisciplinary tumor surgery, and outcomes of liposuction after lymphatic pathway reconstruction in lymphedema, among others, were presented.
While admiring innovations in surgery, special attention continues to be paid to individualized patient care, from the indication for surgery all the way to the completion of successful therapy.
According to studies, this continuously improves satisfaction in doctor-patient communication, which ultimately results in a high quality gain in medical treatment. Making decisions together with the patient, informing them in detail, explaining alternative treatments, finding answers to questions and ambiguities, and taking responsibility for the recommendation are essential for us surgeons in order to give consistency to the „surgical art of healing in a changing values system„.
In this sense, the surgeons' congress was once again a valuable enrichment – we look forward to informing you about these interesting topics!
