Lower eyelid (eye)

What does blepharoplasty mean

An eyelid surgery means an eyelid lift in the upper and/or lower eyelid area.

A lower eyelid lift may be necessary as we age due to sagging of the skin and muscle around the eye. An eyelid lift is usually performed for aesthetic reasons, but an upper eyelid blepharoplasty may also be medically necessary if the visual field is already restricted. The fatty tissue on both the lower eyelid and the upper eyelid can swell and, together with the sagging muscles and skin, cause unsightly bags under the eyes.

The aim of blepharoplasty is to tighten the sagging tissue, thus "lightening" your gaze and making your eyes sparkle.

Depending on the degree of suffering and severity, you should decide for yourself when to undergo surgery. We will of course be on hand to advise you.

Information on the operation

In lower blepharoplasty, the excess skin and muscle are also marked first. After local anesthesia, the incision is made close to the lash line. The muscle must be exposed, tightened and fixed to the outer corner of the eye with a suture. The skin can then be sparingly removed and tightened. If the bags under the eyes are very pronounced, some fatty tissue can be removed. The skin is also closed with a fine skin suture.

Hospital stay and anesthesia

Upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed individually or together under local anesthesia. If expressly requested by the patient, upper and lower blepharoplasty can also be performed under a short anesthetic.

A hospital stay is not required for eyelid surgery.
